Road Base is a quarried product, typically blue to black in colour, ranging in 20mm in size down to dust. It comprises a mix of crushed rock particles and blue metal gravel. The smaller rocks and dust help to compact the Road Base down hard to give you a firm stable surface to work with. For the best compaction make sure the material is wet, this makes sure the fines combine tightly with the larger stones. As Road Base compacts well, it serves as a good bed below sand for paving and under decorative pebbles or decomposed granites. Generally, road base can be used anywhere you need a solid base before construction, especially for roads, driveways or paths. Crushed stone and gravel driveways have become extremely popular option for areas where installing asphalt is cost prohibitive. Gravel driveways offer homeowners endless possibilities for creating a surface that reflects their taste and style. Another great benefit for using gravel or crushed stone, they are very easy to work with, are extremely affordable, simple to maintain, can be very unique, and will provide a very attractive appearance.
Road Base is used as a Sub Base for paved areas or it can also be used as a path or driveway just by itself. Road Base helps with the drainage underneath pavers. Road base is used as the foundation of a road or for driveways. Road base is made from crushed limestone and limestone dust which makes it interlock and compact better than round rock would. Road Base is a well graded material consisting of various sized particles containing coarse and fine aggregate to enable compaction. Road Base can be used for many of your compacting jobs around the home, such as: paths, car parks, under slabs, driveways and walkways.
Recycled Road Base, often called ‘Rotor Mill,’ compacts well and serves as a good a solid bed and provides a stable layer of support below sand for paving, paths, driveways or concreting, and under decorative pebbles or decomposed granites. Recycled Road Base comes from crushed concrete and brick materials that once would have ended up in landfill, but are now being economically repurposed for construction. Recycled Road Base is typically a crushed concrete screened and graded to include aggregate ranging from fines through to 20mm. When calculating how much road base you need, a good measure is 1.5 Tonne = 1m3 Links: https://www.ccaa.com.au/imis_prod/documents/Library%20Documents/Tech%20Note%2076%20Roadbase%20Products%20LR.pdf https://www.abc.net.au/news/2018-07-28/construction-waste-recycled-as-road-base-in-wa-trial/10044394
